Fuels

Few will remember my name, he said

loftily, as though it were grander far

than those stuffing fame’s decrepit chapel.

If you’ll note, he went on, no name is more

acclaimed than Anon! He’s wrong,

we all know, but if that’s the attitude

that fuels his acts of creation, who’re

we to bray like senators, Nay! Nyet! Non!

Fools? What? Fooling around under blank

sheets, as if without fear of this virginal

territory – all that clean white screaming

(not?) to be stained. Leak on it, why not?

Stain the glass with your lips so the light

searching for the floor will press the kiss

to the foot-worn stone. Few will feel it

touching their bared souls, but those who

surrender and stretch out under its

indifference. How many unwed toes

have stepped this way to the knot? We

could lie here, cross, because the stone’s

no good for our desk-beckoned backs,

and dream of history, let up our names

on the heat of a breath, and watch for

the scroll to unroll and cover our foreheads.

Remember me, said the stone, and, on

the morrow, stiffly rising, we do.

It is done

How many times can you bury a man?

Every year we tear our clothes.

Oh, it’s all over.

Meantime the bees are drunk on pollen,

He blooms in an orchard.

The Last of The Hitchhikers

He’s on the side of some

long flat road in Nebraska,

with his thumb out,

hitching a ride.

Many cars zip by

and don't stop.

He lights a cigarette,

inhales, exhales.

Smoke signals

don’t work either.

Anthem

If we think history’s anthemic,

think again.

The soaring black anthems of jet engines

and nation-states from hell.

They speak of transcendence

but what of vacant lots

with chainlink perimeters

and in the midground

the ugly human soul

and for me,

the paranoid itching

of dull afternoons,

what of that? Do

we contain the inventory

of agitation and irritability–

The myriad cruelties

don’t bother me today.

Neither do manic energies

reach me, like I’m

plugged into the wall–

today sunrise looked like sunset

more red than yellow

the ocean its ambient self,

everything’s a landscape.

All these years I’ve

written nothing

yet failed to see

I thought

in verse,

an ashcan went full floral bloom, and bent.
